Professional Stump Grinding
After a tree is removed, the remaining stump can limit how you use your landscape. Samsara Tree Care provides professional stump grinding throughout Portland and the Portland Metro area to help restore usable space, reduce hazards, and prepare your property for what comes next.
What is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of mechanically grinding a tree stump below the surrounding soil level, allowing the area to be restored, replanted, mulched, or incorporated back into the landscape. It is often recommended after tree removal when a stump is in the way of lawn areas, planting beds, walkways, driveways, construction access, or future landscape plans.
Samsara Tree Care provides safe, efficient stump grinding for homeowners, estates, HOAs, commercial properties, and property managers throughout Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Cedar Mill, Bethany, Forest Grove, and surrounding areas.

Not exactly. Stump grinding removes the visible stump by grinding it below the soil surface, but it does not excavate the entire root system. Full stump removal requires digging out the stump and major roots, which is much more disruptive and usually unnecessary for typical landscape restoration.
-
Grinding depth depends on the site, stump size, species, access, and what you plan to do with the area afterward. Many stumps are ground several inches below grade, which is usually enough for mulch, soil, lawn repair, or general landscape restoration. If the area is being prepared for construction, hardscape, or replanting in the exact same spot, let us know so we can discuss the best approach.
-
Sometimes, but it is usually better to plant the new tree slightly away from the old stump location. Wood chips, remaining roots, and decomposing organic material can affect soil conditions. If you want to replant, Samsara Tree Care can help you think through spacing, species selection, and site preparation.
-
Stump grinding produces a mix of wood chips and soil. In many cases, the material can be left on site and used as mulch or backfill, though excess material may need to be redistributed or removed depending on the finished look you want. We can discuss cleanup expectations before work begins.
